Freedom Festival of Arts Comes to Hull and Bridlington

Freedom Festival was established to honor Hull’s Wilberforce ties.

The Freedom Festival will take over Hull’s city center from Wednesday, August 30, to Sunday, September 3, and on Thursday, August 31, the festival will make its first-ever tour stop at Bridlington Beach from 12 to 5 p.m.

With performances taking place in Bridlington for the first time in its 16-year history, a significant arts festival is expanding outside of Hull.

Over the course of five days starting next week, some 100,000 people are anticipated.

Up to 30% of the audience members were traveling from outside of the East Yorkshire region, according to artistic director Mikey Martins, therefore it was critical that the event “evolve.”

The festival, which starts on August 30, features an indoor and outdoor schedule of ticketed and free street theater, art, and music events.

As part of its ‘Freedom on Tour’ concept this year, organizers are presenting four physical circus and dance performances for the first time in Bridlington on August 31.

“It’s another way of trying to find those new audiences,” Mr. Martins said.

Looking at our data and evaluation, “we know we have a lot of audiences that come from the East Riding already and we might find some new audiences we never met before.”

Although Mr. Martins described the new project in Bridlington as a “test,” he hoped to continue if it was successful.

If 1,000 people participated in that initiative, I would be overjoyed. That would probably be a huge success in the first year.

Throughout the festival, more than 120 performances are being held in a number of venues.

“During the festival and other events like ours, significant sums of money are spent in the city.”

Up till 3 September 2023, there will be a Freedom Festival.
