Jamie Dornan Talk About ‘Fifty Shades’ Role and its Effects

Jamie Dornan: Critics would ‘despise’ the Fifty Shades’ book versions.

When Jamie Dornan agreed to play Christian Grey in the hot “Fifty Shades of Grey” film series, he was aware of what he was getting into – and we’re not talking about bedsheets.

In the trilogy of movies based on E. L. James’ erotic fiction, Dakota Johnson and Dornan played the roles of Christian Gray and Gray, respectively.

In an interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, actor Jamie Dornan stated it took him some time to warm up to his part in the movies and that he talked to his friends and family about working on the movies.

Charlie Hunnam first won the role of Grey, but Dornan was called back when he withdrew. “It wasn’t an instant yes by any means,” Dornan stated.

“It needed to be discussed. I asked my friends, family, and many actors for advice.

He continued:

I knew the man was going to get crushed here, so I felt a little bit of relief when I didn’t get it. He might have felt the same way. I was there suddenly, but I had far less time to make a choice and I was cast five weeks before we started shooting.

“I knew it had all that baggage,…” The truth was that it would earn a ton of money, be adored by the audience and despised by the critics. The books were affected in that way. A

nd that is the point we were trying to make. We were following the rules strictly since we were aware of the consequences.

“Movies that are made for the fans and that fans love can be seen as a success,” Dornan continued. “I’m glad Dakota and I were able to come out in the intervening years and make work that people still like. I have some of those said critics do a bit of a 180,” Dakota continued.

Fifty Shades of Grey shattered numerous box office records in the UK and Ireland during its first weekend of release in 2015.

Over the course of its opening weekend, the adaptation brought in a staggering £13.5 million, surpassing the total box office receipts of the other Top Ten movies.

With its £13.5 million gross, Fifty Shades of Grey breaks numerous records at the UK and Irish box office, including those for the biggest ever opening for an 18+ picture. The biggest ever opening for a non-franchise or sequel film, and the biggest ever opening for a February release.

Then came two more movies, Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018).
