Voice of Mario in Nintendo Games Steps Down After 27 Years

Charles Martinet leaves role as the voice of Nintendo’s iconic Mario.

Beginning with Super Mario 64 in 1996, Charles Martinet has been playing the part for 27 years.

Luigi, Mario’s identical twin, and their adversary Wario were also given voices by him.

Charles will now assume the newly created position of “Mario ambassador,” according to Nintendo.

He’ll keep touring the globe, spreading the joy of Mario and communicating with all of you, the titan of Japanese video games declared.

“Working with Charles over the years to help bring Mario to life has been an honor, and we want to thank and celebrate him,” the statement continued.

“My new adventure begins!,” Martinet wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. In my heart, each of you is Numba One.

One of Mario’s famous catchphrases, “#woohoo,” was added by the 67-year-old.

For the most video game voiceover recordings of the same character (104 at the time), the American actor won the Guinness World Record in 2019.

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Martinet played his father Giuseppe in a minor role; Chris Pratt played the Italian plumber instead.

Two years ago, at a Canadian gaming convention, Martinet told the audience that he would like to continue to voice Mario “until I drop dead,” but that if his health prevented him from doing so. He would ask Nintendo to find a replacement.

Wonder, the next installment in the series, scheduled for release in October. It is unclear who will take Martinet’s place in the position.
